AVG is delighted to announce its inaugural online viewing room. Forms and Figures is a curated presentation of new and recent artwork by three emerging artists: Elizabeth Ekpetorson, Beatriz Manteigas and Chigozie Obi. Each artist features a selection of artwork that visually presents a figurative or abstract expressionist aesthetic of the human form and figure, while symbolically exploring personal stories to shape deeper meaning and understanding around gender, race, identify and equality.
Elizabeth Chioma Ekpetorson was born in 1991 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. As a child, she has always had the love of drawing from picture books, comic strips and also painting. She graduated from the University of Port-Harcourt, where she obtained her BA in Fine Arts and Design. Elizabeth completed her secondary education at Government Technical College (G.T.C) Port-Harcourt, and then proceeded to the University of Port-Harcourt, where she obtained her BA in Fine Art and Design. Using human forms and expressions, her artworks are predominantly rendered in charcoal and acrylic, with themes on contemporary human issues. She has participated in various group shows throughout the country of Nigeria. This is Elizabeth's first group exhibition with Art Village Gallery.
Elizabeth, also known as Eleez, discovered her love for art right from childhood when she first noticed her passion and talent for drawing. "I just knew I would derive the most joy from following the creative path. It all became clearer to me that I was on the right path during my industrial training in Lagos." The artist defines her artistic approach as a blend of cubism and impressionism. Through her artwork, she seeks to draw attention on the notion of self-acceptance, embracing one’s self unconditionally, without fear or exception.
Elizabeth currently lives in Lagos, where she works as a full time studio artist.

"By drawing nude figures and portraits, I reveal the personalities behind clothing, highlighting the importance of looking beyond appearances and seeing my subjects for who they truly are.
Beatriz Manteigas (b. 1990) is a visual artist who works between Cascais and Aveiro, Portugal. Beatriz grew up and studied in Lisbon although she now lives and works on the countryside of Portugal, where her family has a farm. As a child Beatriz woke up very early and went to the living room to draw. Despite her parents being teachers, interest in the visual arts has always existed in the family. Also as a child she visited Portugal’s and Europe’s major museums, although in recent years she has been revisiting them with a different maturity. She is a painter and researcher, who exhibits individually and collectively in Portugal, but also abroad, albeit less often.
Beatriz holds a BA in Painting (2012), a MFA in Artistic Anatomy (2014), and she is currently a PhD student in Drawing at the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) at the Fine-Arts Faculty of the University of Lisbon. She has also attended to periods of study at the University of Oporto, Valencia’s Polytechnic and the Royal Academy of St. Petersburg. Beatriz has also been the director of Quinta das Relvas – Arts and Sustainability Association since 2016, and has been a researcher for the Fine Arts Studies and Research Center of the University of Lisbon (CIEBA) since 2017. Beatriz' art has exhibited in galleries and museums since 2009.

"The study of the body and its representation, its forms and colors has always attracted my particular interest. More than an object to represent, the body, which encloses the soul, thoughts, joys, fears and anxieties, is also that invisible form, sometimes more present than the body shape itself. My vision of this natural world which in some cases approaches the abstract, the incomplete and the wrong is what characterizes my final visual solutions, always using drawing as primary language. On this path, I can focus not only on the particular body but also on the collective one, dedicating myself to question society problems through the body: I believe in the power of art to make the world a better place. I don’t mean art can give answers, but that art can help us question."

"About the female body well, it is just (most of the time) more interesting to draw. I would say it is something that most painters would agree on and it is really about the female body shapes. This particular choice was something that was common on earlier works (even on a previous "madonas" series I painted back in 2009) and on both series I keep on having in mind to represent the female body not as art history taught us (fragile and romantic) but as women actually are - a power of nature that creates and cares for nature itself!"
Chigozie Obi (born 1997) is a multi-dimensional visual artist who experiments with the use of the layering of multiple materials. Her work is consistent in the use of vibrant colors and figures to portray emotions and stories formed from personal experiences and focuses on the representation of Black/African people and their diversity.

Chigozie obtained a bachelors degree of Visual Arts from the Creative Arts department, University of Lagos in 2017. Her work has been featured in many group exhibitions which include, MoCada Museum's silent auction (2019), Collective Renditions, African Artists Foundation, Lagos (2019), Rele Gallery in Lagos (2018), The Studio Scout, Omenka Gallery, Lagos (2018), The first Ibadan Affordable Art Fair (2018), Rasheed Gbadamosi Eko Art Expo (2017). She was also selected as Arthouse Contemporary's Artist of the month (July 2018).
"The Shades of Black series hopes to share the beauty of black people and their various skin tones placing a focus on albinos. Albinos are often discriminated against in our society. In our interactions with them, we tend to forget they are just as black as the rest of us, the only difference being the lack of melanin pigment in their skin. In addition to this, there is little representation of albinism in the mainstream media. This theme hopes to push for change in the way we treat and view one another, never forgetting no one is less African or Black because of their skin tone and should not be treated as such. ‘Shades of Black’ aims for people to embrace themselves regardless of conventional standards and definitions."

"Tattoos are deeply rooted in humanity's history. They have longed served different purposes from body beautification to identification, remembrance, healing, traditional and cultural rites. But looking different also attracts negative reactions. In many instances people with tattoos are reduced to stereotypes and judged negatively because they are different. Adorned illustrates a woman embracing and confidently showing off her body markings without regards to the common mentality of how she may be perceived by those who find discomfort in her appearance."

My art is a catalogue of personal experiences. It is a channel for thoughts, ideas and feelings that are inspired by events in my life as well as those of the people around me. My practice also carries my personal views about the world and aims to create sustained conversations with the purpose of informing or educating my audience.
